β β Hey Reader, β My best students think long-term, but act daily. β They focus on slow growth and build a language practice so that when the right opportunity presents itself, they're ready. β Some of these students are disciplined by nature. Others are not. But regardless of which of the two you are, you can manufacture the discipline and motivation you need with commitment devices. β As James Clear says, a commitment device is "a choice you make in the present that controls your actions in the future." β Here are a few examples of commitment devices:
β The point is to make an irreversible decision or purchase that turns your desired action into a personal obligation. And next week, you'll have a special opportunity to do that for your English practice. β For the first time since I started teaching independently 10 years ago, I'll be offering Black Friday deals that reward students who want to make a deeper, longer-term commitment to unblock and boost their English. β These deals will offer a significant, one-time-only discount to incentivize you to make 2024 the year that you unblock your English. β And unlike other Black Friday deals, these will help you become an active learner and creator, not a passive consumer. They'll be investments in your personal growth and development. β I'll tell you more soon, but if you've been waiting for an excuse to prioritize your English and start speaking with confidence again, keep an eye out for my next email.β school cafeteria πHungry for more? "The more good ideas you collect, the more you can choose from to be influenced by." β β Austin Kleon, Steal Like An Artist π β Bestselling author and educator Seth Godin has posted a short essay on his blog every day for the last 15 years, so he knows a thing or two about commitment and streaks. In this one, he talks about the connection between commitment, practices, and habits. β π No Time? Discover The 7 Cs (schoolofjuan.com) In case you missed it, I wrote about commitment being one of the 7 Cs you should reflect on before you blame time for your failures. β π Fully Focused (Mastery Monday/Rocket Fuel challenge) If you're truly going to commit something, you have to say no to some of the other things you'd like to do, even if it's just temporary. This challenge from earlier in the year will help you reflect on that. Did you find this email useful? Please consider forwarding it to a friend who's on the same journey as you.
