πŸ‚ What Season (Of Life) Are You On?

Hey Reader,

How would your life change if you started treating it as a series of seasons?

When you think of seasons, the first thing that comes to mind is winter, spring, summer and fall, and the pendulum effect that these four seasons have on your behavior and mood.

Sports fans might think about their hometown team's position in the league standings, and Netflix lovers will recall binging the latest installment of their favorite series.

But your life is a series of seasons, too.

And unlike the ones mentioned above, the seasons of your life aren't dictated by the calendar, the weather, or an algorithm. They're dictated by you, so you have to know when they're changing, and how to make the most of each one.

Because there's one thing they have in common with your fashion, your favorite team, and the plots of your beloved shows:

The things that work in one season may not work in the next.

Having said that, how do you even know when a season is ending and another is beginning?

For many, it's more of a feeling or sudden loss of energy. For others, it can be a major change in priorities, or a major life event that reminds you of the impermanence of work, home, and love.

And sometimes, it's a window of opportunity that's only open for a limited moment in time. In my case, I was fortunate to jump through several of these windows when I lived in Brazil. One of them is probably the reason you're reading.

But windows of opportunity aren't black holes that suck you in with their gravitational pull.

You can choose to ignore the existential "Are you still watching?" message, press play to resume, and pretend that life will continue in perpetual summer like a digital nomad.

Or... you can treat these windows as cracks in the universe that were placed here for you, like the wormhole in Interstellar. Escape hatches that help you turn off your autopilot and regain the momentum you need to make profound changes in your life.

It's your choice to make.

As for me, I think seasons are like the swinging of the grandfather clock that my grandparents had in the suburbs of Queens.

The winter nights were so quiet you could hear the ticking of the pendulum from the upstairs bedrooms. It would keep me up at night when I slept over. But as annoying as it was to hear it while trying to fall asleep, I accepted it because I knew the pendulum was what kept the clock going.

Change can be just as annoying when it storms back into our lives, but it's that same uncomfortable pendulum swing of the seasons that propels our lives forward and extends our time.

Life is change and renewal. The moment we stop changing seasons is the moment our pendulum starts to slow down.

And when the pendulum stops, our time is up. βŒ›οΈ

So how do you keep the pendulum swinging and maximize the new seasons of your life?

Look for my next email on Sunday where I'll share 3 thoughts and questions for you to consider this season based on my last 20 years of pendulum swings.

Have a great week!

Juan

Hey Reader, My best students think long-term, but act daily. They focus on slow growth and build a language practice so that when the right opportunity presents itself, they're ready. Some of these students are disciplined by nature. Others are not. But regardless of which of the two you are, you can manufacture the discipline and motivation you need with commitment devices. As James Clear says, a commitment device is "a choice you make in the present that controls your actions in the...
